Finger Knitting

Last modified date

This seems like a really weird thing to write about, but I feel like finger knitting is quite underrated.

For one thing, it’s quite simple, and it’s really easy to learn. You can also change the number of fingers used to adjust the thickness of the strand. Also, to finger knit, you only need wool or fabric strips. You can finger knit pretty much anything that you could otherwise crochet or knit.

TO FINGER KNIT: 1. Have your non-dominant hand palm up and hold the wool in your other hand. 2. Loop the wool over your pointer finger with the tail towards your thumb. Loop it behind your middle finger, in front of your ring finger and behind your pinky. 3. Loop the wool in front of your pinky, behind your ring finger, in front of your middle finger and in front of your pointer finger. 4. Then, put the wool in front of all of the fingers (without tucking it in). 5. On the pointer finger, pull the bottom loop on top of the top one and over the finger. Repeat this with the remaining 3 fingers. Then loop the wool over the fingers going the other way. Repeat however many times you want, pulling on the emerging strand of finger knitting when it’s long enough. 6. To finish up, pull one of the loops over another on a different finger and repeat until there’s one left. Then, cut wool and double knot it to the loop.

For example, a headband, a chair cover or a bag. I’ve made both a chair cover and a book bag out of sewn together finger knitting strands, and my sister has made two headbands. To make the chair cover/rug I finger knitted a realllyyyy long strand with four fingers and then sewed it together to make a “rug”. It did not work. It kinda turned into a really long Link hat thing. Then I put it onto my chair to make it fluffy.

I made the bag by making a long strand of finger knitting using strips of an old sheet and then sewing it together to make a bag shape with a flap. Then I sewed the two halves of a press stud together and put a button on top of the flap on the other side of the press stud. Then I finger knitted three strands of finger knitting and plaited them together to make a bag strap then tied it to both sides of bag.

The bag’s made out of an old sheet because I tried to make a rag rug using a sheet (a good craft if you’re not tense) but, like the finger knitted chair cover, it turned into a hat thing. So I used the fabric strips to make a bag.

Even if you’re not trying to make something in particular, it’s a good stim/thing to do with your hands while watching TV or something.
